The OSR at Gen Con 2012

I'm passing along a post by Bill Barsh of Pacesetter Games & Simulations... :-)

I would like to announce that for the second straight year, there will be an OSR booth at Gen Con! Last year, Joe Browning of XRP did a fantastic job and really gave the OSR a boost. This year, I will be running the booth, with some help from the good guys at Faster Monkey Games.

So far we have some great OSR companies participating including Expeditious Retreat Press, Black Blade Publishing, Faster Monkey Games, Center Stage Miniatures, Frog God Games, Lamentations of the Flame Princess, Henchmen Abuse, Weird Adventures and Pacesetter Games & Simulations. There will probably be more to add to this list.

If you are an OSR publisher, send me an email I will get the relevant information to you.

Just like last year, I am offering up the OSR booth as a nexus for anyone who would like to use it as a meeting place. I will also bring along a whiteboard and you can post information during the con regarding events, open gaming, etc.

For more information, contact me at your convenience at bbarsh@pacesettergames.com

Thanks Shawn!

I'd like to again thank Shawn over at Rather Gamey for letting us use his wonderful Old School Rocks! logo at the OSRG booth at Gen Con 2011. I think it's a great logo and I'm very thankful for his generousity.

Thanks Shawn!

Gen Con's over and I'm Tired.

Gen Con's now in the books and Suzi and I finally made it home yesterday. As some of you know, we're moving next weekend and on the way back from the convention we stopped to pick up the keys for our new apartment. Everything was going as planned until we go to put some of our convention things (tables, racks, banners) into the basement storage area of our new place and find out that our space is occupied by a different apartment. We told the people at the desk to contact those individuals and let them know they have 5 days to move their stuff.

A minor hiccup, but a rather annoying one as I got to move all the stuff that was going into the basement into our 2nd floor apartment, just to eventually move it back down. Yay, fun. Well gotta go, have more post-con stuff to take care of.

The OSRG Booth: Ready

Put some pics up at the OSRG blog of the booth. The last one's blurry, 'cause I can't take a picture worth crap, apparently. :)

The OSRG Booth (now with pictures)

Here are two pics of the booth from right after we moved everything in from the loading dock. It's always hot and sweaty work. The AC isn't turned on until Wednesday evening after they kick out all of the exhibitors. :)

The front of the booth.

And our gigantic pile 'o goodies.

Saturday Before Gen Con

The Saturday before Gen Con has always been a busy one for us at XRP. We've been displaying since 2003 and Saturday is the "get everything done day" for us. For many of those years we were driving into Indy from Dallas, meaning that we'd leave on Monday to show up late Tuesday and get the booth ready on Wednesday. For the past 4 years, however, our drives only been 4-5 hours, which is a hell of a lot nicer.

Today I've got to print up all the character sheets for the Tourney Adventure (The Obsidian Sands of Syncrates) as well as a back-up copy of the adventure as that one's supposed to be delivered to us at the show. Speaking of which, I'm going to re-read the adventure to make sure I get everything right. I like running the tourney and would like to preemptively thank the two other GMs we've got running for us. Thanks guys!

The blog here will probably go dark for the next week or so 'cause of the Con and the fact that we have to move a week later. :)

Gygax Memorial Fund at the OSRG booth at Gen Con

Just wanted to draw attention to the OSRG booth at Gen Con 2011. The Gygax Memorial Fund is going to be at the booth this year. I think it's great news for a great cause.

The Books are Coming In...

Thought I should let everyone know that more books have arrived for the Old School Renaissance Group (booth 1541 at Gen Con 2011). I'm keeping track of incoming books at the OSRG blog and the old excitement is building.

Keeping Tabs on the Gen Con Booth

Thought I should draw my reader's attentions to the Old School Renaissance Group blog. I'm going to keep tabs on what books arrive as they show up at my door, so those of you who can make it to Gen Con will have an idea of just what's going to be at the booth. So drop by the OSRG blog ocassionally and get a sneak peak at Booth 1541.

The Goldenrod Character Sheet

So I've been making character and information sheets for Advanced Adventures #20: Obsidian Sands of Syncrates (the tourney adventure at Gen Con 2011) using the character sheets created by The Mad Irishman. I think its vitally important for a 4 hour tourney game to have fully-fleshed-out pre-generated characters in an easy-to-use format. The players are coming to a brand-new character and need to quickly understand their abilities, possessions, and spells. They are paying to play the game - its best to make sure the fiddly bits are all in order before they arrive.

This is quite important to the game at the table, but man does it eat up the time. Even though I'm just transcribing the char from a list to the pages, its quite the daunting task. At least I've got The Clash on the music box. :)

1 seat left for the XRP OSRIC tourney at Gen Con 2011.

Just want to let everyone know that there is only 1 seat left in the Expeditious Retreat Press OSRIC tourney at Gen Con 2011. 29 seats have been taken in the first day of registration. The last seat is for RPG1122706. I'm glad we're going to have another full house this year. Hopefully we'll get several more judges next year and be able to expand the number of tables offered.

For those who have signed up, The Obsidian Sands of Syncrates await!

XRP OSRIC Tourney at Gen Con

Our OSRIC tourney's been approved and assigned a location by Gen Con. This year we have 3 tables, so up to 30 players. I put all the pertinent facts up at the OSRG blog to keep all the Old-School gaming at a centralized location.

Old School Renaissance Group blog and Gen Con GM support from XRP

Heya all, we have three things to talk about today. Busy day. :)

Firstly, I've started up an Old School Renaissance Group blog! This blog will have information concerning the OSRG booth at Gen Con. I'm very excited to be part of helping bring the OSR to GenCon and I thought a centralized location of information would best serve all of us. So drop by and subscribe to the blog to keep up-to-date about what's going on with the OSRG at Gen Con.

Secondly, Expeditious Retreat Press is looking for more tourney judges at our 1e Gen Con tourney this year featuring the Advanced Adventure The Obsidian Sands of Syncrates. We've got two GMs so far, but I'd love to have more, as there always seems to be more players wanting to play 1e at Gen Con than we've got GMs. Our tourney GMs get a free signed copy of the tourney adventure along with an additional free copy of an Advanced Adventure of their choice that they can pick up from the Old School Renaissance Group booth.

Thirdly, here's a deal if you're interested in running any other of our Advanced Adventures at Gen Con 2011. Let me know which Advanced Adventure your running and I'll send you a free PDF copy of that Advanced Adventure and we'll also give you a signed copy of the Gen Con 2011 tourney adventure, The Obsidian Sands of Syncrates when you drop by the Old School Renaissance Group booth at Gen Con.

So please contact me at josephbrowning@gmail.com and we'll get more old-school gaming going on at this years Gen Con.

Down the Shadowvein & Call for Gen Con Tourney GMs

I have two more sections on this one to go and I already have almost 12k words. That's normally the limit I place upon submitted manuscripts. I get special word-count privileges. :) It's turning into quite a fun lower-level underdeeps exploration mod, but even with having only two more areas to describe that's only half the map that I originally drew up ala Descent into the Depths. It looks like there will be a follow-up adventure for this one, making it the first two-parter in the Advanced Adventures line.

Also, I've just started writing an adventure called The Obsidian Sands of Syncrates that I plan on using as the Gen Con 2011 Tourney this year. This year it'll be a one session (instead of two session) tourney as I need to be at the OSR booth as much as possible.

If there are any interested GMs out there who'd like to be part of the tourney (so far we have two GMs total), drop me a line at josephbrowning@gmail.com and introduce yourself. I'd love to have several tables going at once (last year we had 3) and welcome assistance.

OSR booth - Jam packed with goodies

Ok, so far at the Old-School Renaissance Group booth at Gen Con it looks like we're going to have over 80 OSR products. 80+. Holy carp, Batman! I think there's going to be a lot of stunned, surprised, and very happy people at the convention this year. :)

IMO, it's going to be amazing to see all in one place. Simply awesome.

The OSR has a booth at Gen Con 2011!

This is the news that I couldn't say earlier. There will a booth at Gen Con featuring Old-School products from at least 7 OSR companies; Black Blade Publishing, Brave Halfling Publishing, Expeditious Retreat Press, Frog God Games, Goblinoid Games, Pacesetter Games & Simulations, and all the way from Finland,  Lamentations of the Flame Princess. Suzi and I will be running the booth at the convention. The Old-School Renaissance Group has arrived and the OSR will be in force at Gen Con this year! I'm tremendously excited by this next step in the OSR.

Hopefully the booth will act as the hub for the OSR community at Gen Con. I'd like to have a "master list" of all the Old-School gaming going on at the convention at the booth to help direct people towards those games.

I also want to let the entire OSR community know that the booth is open to everyone's products as long as we have space. That means if you've published an OSR product you can have your product for sale at Gen Con 2011 with all of the other awesome OSR products already committed to the booth. Much of the strength of the OSR comes from individuals and we want to have the community there in as great a capacity as possible.

So if you're interested in having products at the booth, contact me at josephbrowning@gmail.com for the details.
