Lion Men

Since you can't have a post-apoc game without lion men...

Limited Use Powers
• Lion men have three randomly determined powers at the Intermediate threshold that they may use 3 times per day if the power is not one that constantly functions.

OSRIC rules at XRP website

Just thought I should let everyone know that I've got the OSRIC core rules up for sale at our website now. I decided to re-sell the books so that if a person wants, he or she can buy the rules and a butt-load of OSRIC/1e adventures at the same time. I'm thinking about making some "new campaign" bundles featuring the core rules and some of our low-level adventures.

One Scary Sculptor

Was just turned on to Thomas Kuebler. He does some amazingly detailed and life-like work of some rather twisted subjects. Below are three of his gallery images, starting with a positronic-brained zombie, then on to a musical hillbilly ettin of sorts, and finally on to a most-proper orc. Take some time and visit his site to see tons of great work.

Advanced Adventures #23: Down the Shadowvein for sale!

I'm pleased to announce that our first follow-up adventure in the Advanced Adventures line has just been released. Down the Shadowvein picks up where Pod-Caverns of the Sinister Shroom left off, exploring what lies downstream of the underground river called Shadowvein. I'm happy it's finally out and I hope everyone enjoys! It is available in print from our website and Lulu. In PDF you can find it at Your Games Now and rpgnow.

Down the Shadowvein is an OSRIC(tm) module designed for 6-10 adventures of levels 3-5.

You carefully load your canoes and launch into the fast-moving waters of the underground river named Shadowvein. The Pod-Caverns of the Sinister Shroom behind you, the veracity of the map that is to be your guide into the dark unknown will soon be tested. Hopefully what is written is accurate, but if it is not, your wits, wile, and brawn should serve you well as you journey down the Shadowvein!

Down the Shadowvein picks up where The Pod Caverns of the Sinister Shroom left off, but it can be played by those who have not explored that module. Down the Shadowvein continues in The Mouth of the Shadowvein.

Sunday Un-Seriousness

I've taken most of the week off and had a mini-vacation with Suzi before she heads back into studyland. I've greatly enjoyed it, went down to Cincinnati to Jungle Jim's, saw the Columbus Museum, the Franklin Conservatory, and Cosi. ...And we watched a lot of Psych on TV. Good vacation, but tomorrow the studies start and work begins in serious.

EDIT: there was a funny picture here, but it doesn't seem to load anymore. Sorry!

Suzi's Back

from constant studying for her Masters as the quarter ended yesterday. I think I won't accomplish much today and simply enjoy a day without any pressing business or school. Best wishes to everyone!

Because I like It!

Tome of Tomes

The Dwarven Way
Author: Rogar Ironlode
Race: Dwarf
Dimensions:  8x8x1
Weight: 4 lbs.
Materials: Leather-bound, stoneboard, parchment
Rarity: Rare
Fields of Study: Demi-humankind
Special Knowledge Categories: Philosophy & Ethics
Value: 45 gp

A very early work, The Dwarven Way uses the ancient dwarven runes and is rather difficult for readers of modern dwarven to understand. It lays out the basics of good and evil, right and wrong, and just and unjust for the dwarven people. Although rarely read today, much of the basic solidness of the dwarven outlook on life can be found within this ancient tome, proving once again that dwarves are as slow to change as the mountains they call home.

Creative Problems

One of the blessings about being creative is that I never seem to lack in cool ideas. For instance, right now I have 4 modules I'm working on in various stages of development. Hell, I even have just a title, "May Your Axes Chip and Shatter" for a module. I have no idea yet what that one's supposed to be, perhaps a dwarven-only adventure or even a stone-age adventure. The latter would be pretty cool - party sent "back in time" where everything is mega-fauna, dinosaurs, and of course, Sleestak. Well, I'd file the names off, but that would be the inspiration.

Anywhooo... the point is that being creative is easy for some people. It's the "being worky" bit that's hard. Getting all these ideas down and finished isn't an exercise in creativity - it's an exercise in persistence. And because everyone should have a Sleestak a day to keep Grumpy away.

USA Map ala Middle Earth

Cool map I stumbled upon: The USA done in a Middle-Earth style. I like how the states were simplified and think it could double as a post-apoc map were someone so inclined. Here's the article about it.

Another Feature for the Blog Coming Soon

I've recently hit upon another idea like Tome of Tomes and Formula Folio for the blog. It won't appear for a few weeks, I suspect, and we'll see how it plays out. I like having little snippets that I can put up that people can grab for their game or just enjoy reading.

Formula Folio

Predict Weather
For the ink required to scribe a druidical predict weather scroll

1 oz. of giant squid sepia
1 oz. of giant octopus ink
1 oz. of holly berry juice

Beginning at sunup on a breezy summer’s day, mix all ingredients in a wooden bowl. Dip the right forefinger into the mixed liquid and hold the finger up and test the wind direction until the ink dries. Repeat this for several hours until at least half of the liquid has evaporated. Decant into a wooden vial. Makes enough ink for 2 scrolls. Any special quill is suitable.

More from Kalmakoff

I'm really digging on this guy. Here's another from Nicolas Kalmakoff or his name in his native Russian, Nikolai Konstantin Kalmakoff. Here's some info on the guy (he was kinda nuts) and a gallery of his works.

Name Your Price Sale First 3 Items Taken

Just got an e-mail for the first of the Name Your Price sale and three items were priced and claimed. There's two items left to be negotiated, so get your offer in if what you're looking for isn't one of the below. Also, I've decided to extend the sale until tomorrow, seeing as I have quite a few international readers and people's work schedules may interfere with such a short sale.

Malevolent and Benign: A First Edition Bestiary (Hardcover) $30.00
Advanced Adventures Compendium 1 (Hardcover) $37.50
Advanced Adventures Compendium 2 (Hardcover) $37.50

Name Your Price Sale! Today Only!

So today I woke up and checked Lulu, and noticed I hadn't made a sale while I slept. That makes a sad Joe. So, I'm going to try to do something I've never done, and as far as I know has never been done in the OSR crowd: A Name Your Price sale. Here's how it's going to work.

1. Pick one of our products out at Lulu and decide how much you want to pay for it.
2. Send me an e-mail at josephbrowning@gmail.com and if I find it acceptable, I'll change the price of that single product for today only at Lulu. FYI, I'm not going to sell something that I don't make a profit on. XRP puts the food on my table and if you've seen my belly, you know I like food.
3. I'll accept up to 5 offers, so make up your mind fast.
4. Once I've accepted an offer, I'll put up a link here at the blog to the revised today-only price for anyone else who wants to buy the product.
5. Don't forget that Lulu is running a coupon as well for 20% off. Code is SPACIOUS.

Hrm.. this could turn out to be a pretty fun thing to do. :-)

Advanced Adventures PDF bundle

I've created a bundle of the first 10 Advanced Adventures over at rpgnow.com. This is XRP's first bundle product, so I'm interested in seeing how it goes. It's only $35 for 10 First Edition/OSRIC adventures.

GM's Day and Gary

I've always found it oddly appropriate that the original GM passed away on the day dedicated to all GMs. It's regretful that he went sooner than all of us wanted, but we still have his memory and the game he left behind. Here's to all the GMs and to Gary! Pick up the dice and play...

My 1e Campaign is Over. For Now...

Just had the last session of the 1e game and almost everything got tied up in a neat little bow. Only Aramata the vampire remains "untied" and the group plans on correcting that as quickly as possible. All in all it was a great dozen or so sessions of gaming and I suspect once everyone's RL calms down a little in a few months that the game will pick up again. The party's now in the 6th or so level range and there's a whole big world out there waiting for them...
